Ravens Head Coach Options

Posted on: January 18, 2008 11:05 am

When did the Ravens job become one that everyone stays away from as if it were a lost cause?  When do assistant coaches turn down the chance to take over their own job?  Last time a hot shot coach, Gary Kubiak,  turned down head coaching jobs in 1997/1998, it took him 8 years to be considered again.  The Cowboys can keep Jason Garrett and his will to extract every single dollar from Jerry Jones.  Now, did I think his intentions were solid about considering the Baltimore Ravens, yes.  I just have that little friend on my shoulder whispering in my ear as well saying " he did it to increase his pay in Dallas", as well.

Bring on Marty.  Not so fast.  I agree Marty is a great head coach.  He is the ninth highest coach in wins, but he also had a long career.  You have to be good to have both.  He would provide that ability to show the Veterns to look up to him, as long as they followed his hard nosed ways.  He would provide a great teacher to the game for the younger players.  He would be able to pick and choose some of the better assisant coaches such as Cam Cameron, Dom Capers, Brain Shottenhiemer, Rex Ryan, John Harbaugh, etc.... because he is the older vet coach that gets respect from alot of people in the NFL.

What about home grown talent?  You have Rex Ryan, the players want him, but would it not be the same style of coaching that has led to distractions whenever they have lost since 2004.  If things are good, no problem, everyone on the same page.  If things go south, you start to hear alot of cherping from Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Jonathan Ogden, Willis McGahee.  Rex Ryan is going to be a good head coach, but I think he gains respect from players, but they look at him, not up to him.  He is "thier" guy.  Those types get walked over because the relationship is different.  He becomes the top cheeese, he changes.  The relationship tries to stay the same, but it cannot.  It would cause issues and I really think this is the reason that Rex is not a top choice.  It is why the Ravens want fresh blood at the helm.

Who is it then?  John Harbaugh, from the Eagles....Sorry when I first heard, I instantly think of his more famous brother Jim, coach of Stanford.  He lacks leadership positions such as defensive coordinator, but he spent 10 years in coaching.  He had to learn a thing or two from Ray Rhodes, Andy Reid, and Jim Johnson.  So the track is set.  He even learned what not to do by talking with Marty Morningweig, the offensive coordinator.  He comes from a family of coaching.  He has one less season as a coordinator to Jason Garrett, but seven more seasons of coaching.  He was a defensive back coach in college ranks and pros.  Those make really good head coaches for some reason.  The Colts Tony Dungy brings to mind.  He is energetic and in your face type of coach.  He has the lunchpale mentality of the city.  Maybe that is why he is highly regarded.

I know Ozzie and Steve will make a good choice.  Steve really cares about bringing winning football to Baltimore.  Remember......This guy once sat in the same stands as us from 1997 to 2002.

About My never ending Story......
You know what really bugs me about life. Every single person we elect into office, big or small, state or federal, seems to know the "best intrest" for everyone of their constituents. Take my great governor of Maryland. He thinks everyone should do this, he will do that... all he has done is line his political pockets for higher office since his days at city council. He can care less about the effects of taxes he wants to raise, on everyone not just lower class or higher classes. What he supposive measures to stop this or stop that to return. Look at what has happened, absolutely NOTHING. JUST A SHOCKER TO ME..... Look, this is not a bash to this party or that party, because in all honesty they both have flaws....These people try to put thier nose into everything...Steriods, False Testimony for athletes...to what GET THEIR NAME INTO THE HEADLINES. This is the same time that we have dispear throughout the South, murders in every city, drugs use at an all time high. Even though Sports are a stepping stone for our youth, these "elected officals" need to see the big picture and not the small one within Baseballs inner circle....
